No other Louisiana metro has to plan around an Air Force base the way Shreveport-Bossier does. Barksdale brings thousands of families to Bossier Parish on orders, and the LA GATOR application process was not designed with them in mind. The program is open to them, the money is the same, and the paperwork takes an extra step that is worth knowing about before the window opens rather than during it.
The residency problem, and the actual fix
LA GATOR is for Louisiana residents, and the application verifies residency by sending your Social Security number or ITIN to the Louisiana Department of Revenue. If you are stationed here but have kept legal residence in another state, or you simply have not filed a Louisiana return yet, that automatic check fails. It is not a rejection. The application moves to a manual review path, and according to Odyssey's own support documentation the route through it looks like this:
- Submit the application and expect the automatic verification to fail.
- In the section asking for a Louisiana state ID or driver's license, upload your active-duty orders placing you in Louisiana. The documentation says to upload the orders in each of the three ID slots.
- Upload two Louisiana proofs of address when prompted.
- Upload a 1040.
- Contact Odyssey support and tell them you used active-duty orders in place of residency documents, so the reviewer knows what they are looking at.
Two practical notes. Manual review takes longer than an automatic approval, so a late application is riskier for a military family than for anyone else. And if you have a Louisiana driver's license and a Louisiana tax record, none of this applies to you and the normal process works.
How a PCS lands against the calendar
| Your situation | What to do about the window |
|---|---|
| Already at Barksdale, child in public school | Apply in the spring window like any Louisiana family. Nothing about being military changes the amount. |
| Orders in hand, arriving this summer | You cannot prove Louisiana residency before you have a Louisiana address. Apply as soon as you have two proofs of address, accept that you may land outside the window, and ask about the waitlist and mid-year awards. |
| Arriving mid-year | Expect to pay privately or stay in public school for the remainder of the year, then apply in the next window. Several schools here will enroll mid-year; ask about a payment plan with a credit once an award arrives. |
| PCS out mid-year with an active account | The account is tied to Louisiana residency. Tell Odyssey before you go, and ask the school how it handles a withdrawal against a quarterly deposit already received. |
The schools closest to the base
Bossier Parish has 2 BESE-approved schools, and Bossier City families routinely cross the Red River for school as well, which puts most of the Shreveport options inside a reasonable commute. The larger approved schools in the metro are Calvary Baptist Academy, Evangel Christian Academy, Providence Classical Academy, Glenbrook School, Loyola College Prep, Word of God Academy. Our Bossier and Barksdale directory has the full list with enrollment and STO status.
Three questions worth asking a school as a military family
- Do you enroll mid-year, and do you hold a seat for a family arriving on orders?
- Have you billed Odyssey for a student whose application went through manual review, and did the payment arrive on schedule?
- If we PCS out in March, what happens to the balance of the year's tuition?
If the account does not come through in time
An accredited online school is the fallback most military families here end up considering, because it survives a move. Tuition at the online option we cover runs below the standard award, which means it is affordable even in a year when you are paying out of pocket. See the online school page, and the home-based rules for how registration interacts with the account.
