In Shreveport-Bossier, $5,243 is close to the whole tuition bill.

That is the thing families here miss. LA GATOR pays the same $5,243 to $15,253 statewide, but north Louisiana tuition runs well under what New Orleans and Baton Rouge charge, and 27 schools across six parishes are state-approved to take it. At several of them a qualifying family can get to zero. This site shows which schools, what the account covers, and what to do about the waitlist.

The six-parish picture

27 approved schools, 5,670 students, and a short list of real options

Caddo and Bossier hold 20 of the 27 approved schools; the other 7 are academies in Minden, Grand Cane, Coushatta, Haynesville and Athens that draw from several parishes at once. This is a smaller market than south Louisiana, which cuts both ways: fewer seats to choose from, but tuition the account can actually reach.

K-12 enrollment reported on the state's 2025-26 BESE approval list. The directory also carries 1 school that appears in the federal survey but not on the state list, so you can see where the account cannot pay tuition.

How schooling is shaped here

One campus, thirteen years

New Orleans families change schools at 8th grade and Baton Rouge families often change at 9th. Shreveport-Bossier is built differently: 10 of the 27 approved schools run from pre-K or kindergarten straight through grade 12 on a single campus. You enroll once.

That shape changes the funding question. Instead of asking what the account covers for one stage, you are looking at a thirteen-year commitment where the award renews every spring and the tuition rises with the grade. The schools that span the whole range are Calvary Baptist Academy, Evangel Christian Academy, Providence Classical Academy, Glenbrook School, Word of God Academy.

Three classical schools, which is more than most metros this size have

Providence Classical Academy in Bossier City is the largest classical school in north Louisiana and runs pre-K through 12. Ignite Classical School, Ascension Classical School are smaller and newer, and both are still filling out their upper grades.

Classical schools matter for account math because their tuition tends to sit between a parish elementary and a college-prep campus, and because they are the most common new-school model a church here can actually open. All three are BESE-approved.

The account is also a tutoring and therapy budget

This is the part that gets overlooked in a market with limited seats. A student who stays in public school cannot hold an account, but a home-based student can spend the whole award in the Odyssey marketplace, and a student with an IDEA disability can qualify for up to $15,253 a year. In a metro with 27 approved schools and long waitlists at the biggest ones, that is often the usable option.

Tutoring and test prep

Reading intervention, dyslexia tutoring and ACT prep from a registered provider, paid straight from the account instead of out of pocket.

Speech, OT and behavioral therapy

Licensed therapy is an approved expense. Families pair it with a mainstream school seat or with a home-based year.

Dual enrollment

Courses at LSU Shreveport, Bossier Parish Community College and Northwestern State for high schoolers, inside the award.

Curriculum and technology

Full-year curriculum, online courses, a laptop and learning software, within the published caps.

A worked example

Where the account stops being a discount and starts being the whole bill

A 5th grader at a Shreveport Christian or classical school charging $8,600 in tuition and $650 in required fees, from a household at or below 250% of the federal poverty level.

Tuition + required fees$9,250
LA GATOR, 250%-of-poverty amount− $7,626
STO scholarship (capped at 80% of the state per-pupil amount for K-8)− $1,600
Family balance$24

An illustration, not a quote: Louisiana does not collect tuition figures, and the same family at the $5,243 level with no STO award would owe $4,007 before any school aid. The point is the order of magnitude. In New Orleans the same calculation leaves four figures on the table; here it often does not. How the layers stack →

Plain answers

What Shreveport-Bossier parents ask first

Which Shreveport schools can actually take LA GATOR?

Any school on the state's BESE-approved nonpublic list that registers with Odyssey for the year. That is 27 schools across Caddo, Bossier, Webster, DeSoto, Red River and Claiborne, including all three Diocese of Shreveport schools, the large K-12 Christian campuses, the three classical schools, Southfield, St. Mark's, the Montessori school and the outer-parish academies. The state does not publish which approved schools signed up in a given year, so confirm it with the office.

Is the award really enough here?

Closer than anywhere else in the state. Tuition at the parish elementary schools and the smaller church and outer-parish academies often sits within reach of $5,243 to $7,626, and an STO scholarship can close a modest gap. At the largest college-prep campuses it is a partial payment, not a full ride. Ask each school for the all-in figure including fees, because fees are what move the final number.

We are stationed at Barksdale. Do we qualify?

Active-duty families living in Louisiana under orders can apply. If you have no Louisiana tax record the automatic residency check will fail and the application moves to manual review: you upload your orders in place of a Louisiana ID or license, two Louisiana proofs of address and a 1040, then tell Odyssey support you used orders. Build in extra time, and see our Barksdale guide for how a PCS lands against the March window.

We missed the window.

The 2026-27 window ran March 1 to March 16, 2026. New applicants who were not funded hold a waitlist place and can be awarded as seats open. Funding stayed at $43.5 million for the year, so the list is long. Meanwhile apply for an STO scholarship and the school's own aid; many families enroll that way and add the account when it comes through.

Can we use it for homeschooling?

For purchases, yes: courses, curriculum, tutoring, therapy, testing and technology bought through the Odyssey marketplace. The catch is registration. A family registered with the state as a BESE-approved home study program, or as a nonpublic school not seeking approval, cannot be in LA GATOR at the same time. Call the program line before you apply so you know what you would be giving up.

Is there a Catholic high school?

One: Loyola College Prep, which is coed and takes students in grades 9-12. The diocese's two elementary schools, St. John Berchmans Cathedral School and St. Joseph Catholic School, run pre-K through 8. That is the whole Catholic sector in these six parishes, which is a different world from the 60-plus schools in the New Orleans archdiocese.

Schools, churches & ministries

A market with room to add seats

Around 17,848 Louisiana families applied for 2026-27 and the money covered a fraction of them. North Louisiana has the demand and comparatively few approved campuses: 8 of the 27 approved schools here report under 100 K-12 students, which means a church with classrooms and a plan is not starting from behind. If you already run a school, families arriving here want three numbers from you: tuition, fees, and whether you have a seat.
